It wasn’t until 1920 that women were granted suffrage, but it was 1917 when members of the National Women’s Party — Alice Paul, Lucy Burns and others — picketed outside the White House, burning copies of Woodrow Wilson’s speeches and demanding the right to vote. What resulted — mass arrests (most for “obstructing traffic”), unlawful imprisonment and bloody beatings — became known as the Night of Terror, though it’s fair to say most among my generation don’t know it.

The Night of Terror took place on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Workhouse Prison, in Occoquan, Virginia, ordered his guards to teach the suffragists a lesson. For weeks, the women’s only water had come from an open pail. Their food had been infested with worms. But on this night, some 40 prison guards wielding clubs beat the women senseless — grabbing, dragging, choking, kicking and pinching them, according to affidavits recounting the attacks.

I was 10 when those planes went into the World Trade Center. I had just learned about World War II, I thought the world was over and that fear gripped me for months after. Every news outlet was trying to find out whose responsible and when they would strike again. Eventually the fear subsided because everyone came close together and out of fear came courage to go on. Growing up I had a belief that people are generally selfish and uncaring, but there has been few times when I recognized the greatness of what some would call “the human spirit.”

I was reading a book on the human family it was during that time the rebuilding of faith rather than fear in me. Sometimes no matter how much we hate each other we are all interconnected by being humans. Sometimes I look at atrocities and evil acts and ask how could this have happened? Where were the people who to say stop ….this it’s wrong? But then I see the few who stand up against something even if it isn’t popular. To be fearless is to be feared, people who show bravery in the face of danger and adversity are often rejected because their ideas are feared. I admire people like Martin Luther King Jr., and Gandhi, people who do not conform to an unfair world people feared them and their dreams for a better world. But what I fear the most are people who conform; even when they know what they are conforming to is wrong.

I’d Rather Humble Myself

Often in our lives we make the assumption that everything is okay; that the world around us that is fine. And everything will always be fine. These assumptions are based on grandiosities we believe about who we are in relation to the world around us. We assume, as is part of our nature that we are better than the people and things around us. We often think that the trials and tribulations of others will never affect us. We create a psychological aloofness to the possibility that our dream world will shatter .

Before my world comes crashing down; I would rather humble myself before God does. I don’t want to be shocked when the reality that my plan for my life doesn’t work out. I don’t want to be the person that sees the sick and suffering and just walk past them as if they were dirt. I want to change the world. I know that with every greats change starts off with the humble hope.

Humbling ourselves as people doesn’t mean you have to give up you material possessions and go live in the woods, but what it does mean is opening your mind to the possibility that these things are not as important as they seem. Giving with love is more important the receiving with selfishness.
